Google decides who appears in the Maps “top 3” using three things: relevance (do you match the search?), distance (how close are you?) and prominence (how well-known and trusted are you?). You can't move your shop, but you can improve the other two.
Your Google Business Profile
- Choose the most specific primary category, then add secondary ones
- Write a description that explains what you do and where
- Add every service or product with a short description
- Set correct hours, including holiday hours
- Upload at least 20 real photos — outside, inside, team and work
- Post an update every week
- Turn on messaging and answer questions in the Q&A section
Reviews
- Ask every happy customer — a QR code at the counter makes it easy
- Reply to every review within 48 hours
- Never buy or fake reviews; it can get your profile suspended
Your website and the wider web
- Use the exact same name, address and phone everywhere
- Create a page for each main service and area you serve
- Embed your Google Map on the contact page
- List your business on Justdial, Bing Places and Apple Maps
- Make sure your website loads fast on mobile
Do the first seven this week. Most local competitors haven't — and that's your advantage.
